Very nice album. My press sounds good, maybe can still sound better, but I don't mind anything. Bass is good, no skip, only one click side B. Edit:I just heard, Disc 3 side A, song Runaway, 2 times sound some sort of crackle. Not like that.
Honestly had to listen to YouTube versions to see if it was a bad pressing or not because of some of the weirder parts in Runaway. I didn't have any skipping but there were some sharp sounds on that side of the album that seemed like the needle might skip, if it weren't for a brand new album but was part of the pressing, as I tested two LPs from Amazon and same problem at the exact same time. Oh well, good price for a triple LP and it only happened twice regardless.
Not a terrible pressing but mine does skip once. I had to return my first copy because it was horrible. If you know you can't return your copy do NOT buy it, odds are you are going to get unlucky and get a bad one.
This record is definitely more of a collectors item, which is my favorite thing about it. The album artwork is amazing, and the prints and poster included inside are amazing. The art direction on this item and attention to detail is actually really really cool. In terms of the SOUND however, audiophiles will be disappointed. The record feels like it lacks depth, specifically in the bass. You have to turn it up higher to get good sound, it feels like it was pressed using a digital track instead of the analog. None the less its cool asf to hear this album on vinyl, this is like my favorite album by him. I've recently bought a bootleg version yeezus on vinyl, which surprisingly has much better sound than this one. 8/10 recommend (if you're already a fan of the album).
update: runaway started playing and I was SHOOK. The audio on that track is the best out of all other songs on the album
Hold up... is it just me or are the vocals mixed lower compared to the CD version... turning up the volume made the record sound a lot better for me. The pressing is still imperfect, some random indents in the dead wax and one in the grooves, doesn't effect sound though.
It does lack the dynamics it needs to sound great though. It only sounds a bit better than the CD version. However, Who Will Survive in America sounds amazing.
What is this distortion everyone's complaining about? I can't seem to identify it. It is used as a vocal effect on a few songs, any example of where a pressing flaw causing distortion can be heard?
RATING FOR THE VINYL RECORD: I purchased this 3xLP from Amazon in 2018. When the package came, there were multiple issues. I assume this first one was the fault of Amazon, because they did not put anything to protect the vinyl record, or a fragile label on/in the box it shipped in, and the box was bigger than it. That being said the vinyl record slid around in the box and the box was thrown around like a toy. I purchased off of an underground website that had better shipping conditions. This next part is the pressing company's fault. Monster and Runaway skip throughout most of the song over and over and are unplayable. Very annoying. This was nice to have in my collection because I love the album and it looks decent with my other records, but I cannot play it. Very annoying that Kanye, being one of the biggest artists out there couldn't get a company that could press a vinyl correctly. JPEGMAFIA's "Veteran" was pressed better than this and he's very underground. Also on the wrapper it says it's on "premium vinyl" ok not true and i'm very dissatisfied. I have the CD and it works fine. But I collect records and this was a sad excuse for a vinyl record.EDIT: the 3xLP is nice in theory for collector's purposes but when you have to open the sleeve all the way to get one disc out AS WELL AS switching them out, it's quite obnoxious. One of the songs literally has it's own disc side and every disc has a couple songs worth of space left in the center.
No way to tell for certain but I have a hunch this is cut from CD or a comparable digital master, so the differences between this (and probably the 2011 vinyl) and the CD are down to the cutting engineer. If you want to hear a version without a lot of the distortion (albeit unofficially), track down the “Unmastered” version.
This album is Kanye at his best! Every track has endless replay ability and sounds amazing.Hate the guy all you want but his production and skill is apparent on this gem of an album.
Snagged for 17$ off amazon. sounds like a good pressing, just not that dynamic. This is a joke of a 3LP set though. Monster is it's own side which occupies 30% of the wax. Huh? This would have been an easy 2LP with the amount of runout groove space on these disks.
It's okay, Power has a skip in it and Monster doesn't sound amazing. Don't really recommend for retail, I got my copy for $18, would advise to get it around that price if you want it.
got it today off US seller, no skips, gorgeous sounded bad but still tolerable (but it's a Ye vinyl..had to expect it.) Other than that, was pretty good packaging, only one corner was messed up but not noticeably. Just wish one side didn't have just "Monster" on it. 7/10
Just so all are aware, this CD contains the uncensored cover art of Ye & the phoenix
It's certainly not a great pressing, however I've heard worse. I also never really liked the mix of the digital version, so that might be impacting my enjoyment. Anyway, as said below - distortion (not just sibilance) in some areas, but cleaner in others. Generally quite noisy too. Also I know I shouldn't complain about this but... god the 3xLP is dumb. So much dead wax. Not even 45. Damnit. My tip: wait for it to go super low on Amazon like I did - $22.18 here.
I received a copy yesterday, and it sounds really good at times. However, it will occasionally sound like a distorted mess, and I also have a very annoying crackle at the start of disc 3 side A, in the calm section. Annoying, but pleased overall.
Got my copy via Amazon when the vinyl first became available in late 2010 or early 2011. It's always played flawlessly and sounds great. Complete silence between tracks. I always find it surprising that others have not had a good experience with this album on vinyl. It sounds amazing compared to the digital versions.
My copy sounds fantastic; however, Side F sounds like absolute garbage. Luckily, I'm not the biggest fan of those last three songs. I'd recommend getting this... as long as you don't like the album's ending.
heart of sky
The packaging is really nice with this pressing, although I found it odd that they went all-out with the outer sleeve and inserts but put the records in super generic white paper sleeves. Sound quality is meh: very dull in some places, occasional distortion. The busy choir sections of the opening track sound pretty bad.
Thanks for the review. Saved me from buying this version in hopes of improving my crappy sounding OG pressing.
Brick my own
I'm not a Ye fan but I've heard this is one of his best and after skimming some of the other albums I have to agree that MBDTF is easier to jump in to, a solid release. Based on what I can tell this is a newer master of the album cut at the Mastering Lab in California (they are usually great just like Sterling Sound) but it is still pressed at United like the OG. I acquired this one from Amazon circa April 2017 and the pressing is not the worst I've heard, disc 3 side A has some scuffs and skips in a spot but the rest is pretty good. It does seem like a lottery to find a nice enough copy, the triple LP format and packaging are also complete overkill.
My copy only skipped once on side C, other than that it was a flawless pressing. I bought it on amazon for 14 bucks. No regrets! Great packaging, although a bit difficult/bulky. The first disc/vinyl was warped but did not affect playback.
it sounds more like your turntable is flawed lol
Is there any difference on the package comparing with previous version? Thanks.
Sounds like it was far from flawless then . . .
So. Many. Skips. Would say on my favorite songs but they're all amazing. Wish the vinyl of one the greatest albums ever would've been produced better. Peak Kanye deserves only the best production.
My copy sounds great. I wonder if people didn't clean their records before playing them? Before I cleaned these lps they were covered from debris from the pressing plant.
I bought my version at 'Barnes&Nobles' in Dallas, off Belt ln. My copy was sealed, brand new, however, it had many scratches on my favorite tracks, on this album, I was upset. "Monster", "BlameGame", "Runaway", you name it.. The only good song was, that didn't scratch was "hell of a night" As I waiting, about a week to play the record again. I notice some scratches went away in "Runway" but some stayed in the same spots. Same with other songs, scratches stayed in the same place. But the scratches going away makes me belive, maybe it's the needle, cause I have a 'TechPlay', maybe it's old.? Any1 going thorough the same problems? Any feed bacc would be awesome ????
that's unusual for a brand new record. Its possible that either your tonearm needs balancing, or your needles need a cleaning or replacement.
Can anyone confirm that the cover comes with the "nsfw" artwork
japanese copy has uncensored artwork, doesn't look like theres a listing for it here
Literally the first time I played 'Runaway' there was 2 skips.
generation of new
I have the original press of this record from 2010.There has been a reissue of this record in the last 2-3 months, hence the drop in cost. Can somebody that has purchased a recent reissue please update with new pressing details. The ones for sale here are clearly the reissue. At the back end of last year the original press was going for $80 plus.
This is technically the same press as 2010, as no reissues have been announced. It's a syndicated pressing apparently. Check The College Dropout, same situation. 808s & Heartbreaks did have a reissue for the 30th anniversary of def jam, however.
I just bought the original 2010 limited edition from Roc-A-Fella for about 30$, so I think the prices are just going down.
I just updated matrix. I bought my copy in 2011 so I think I've posted original matrix's. It's pressed at United (U)
And my Late Registration (pressed in CR) sounds Really good. Didn't expect the pressing to sound this good. Crack music!
I think the new one comes from this "Respect the Classics" label: have some good stuff on there. There's a discogs page for Respect the Classics, too.
Hawk Flying
My copy has a sticker on the back saying "Pressed in the Czech Republic". Do alla copys have that? (sounds a little strange since it's a US-release) Or is this an european repress?
What's funny is that I just bought this through Discogs a week ago (for $24.38!) and the sale doesn't show in the statistics. A lot of cheap ones keep popping up/disappearing, so just check the page from time to time and you will probably be able to find one affordably priced.
Sadaron above the Gods
Sales don't show in statistics until the seller has paid their discogs fees, which do not happen weekly.
The Urban Outfitters website says it'll be back in stock on March 4th. Be patient. Don't pay these outrageous prices!
(Quick Review #9)Listen #3:I finally got it. After thinking about it more, and listening to it a third time I understand the concept, how the album is split into 3 parts (beautiful, dark and twisted), to which the songs contribute to these themes. Once you get how this is a concept album, what the concepts are, what tracks fit under what label, how everything connects to each other to tell a story, and what his beautiful dark twisted fantasy is, you will understand this album and understand why everyone loves it so much. I'm not going to spoil it for you here, if you want explanations to the above questions look it up. But listen to this album, and multiple times since 1 listen isn't enough10
(Quick Review #2)Listen #2:I enjoyed it a lot more on Second listen and I'm getting the artistic merit more on this listen. I think I need to listen to it more times to get a final opinion on it, but for nowDecent to Strong 8
Personally I didn't find any problems with the sound of this pressing, I don't know why there are so many complaints about it.
Amazing quality work on artwork and packaging. Cheers to you Kanye West you bring good Art to the masses.
Pressing is actually quite good, compared to College Dropout I bought a few months back (which had almost unlistenable distortion) and is a phenomenal album.
Kanye is a talentless waste of space.
I wish I could say it was a matter of taste, but this album is nearly undisputable. You'll get there, pal. It's not so much an acquired taste as it takes a certain amount of maturity and perspective. Don't take that as a diss, just give it a few more spins. Plus, the packaging and pressing are stellar.
nah lol
did anyones copy come with a download code? or is that not offered? thanks.
great album—doesn't come with a download unfortunately. at least not mine which I purchased new about a month ago
Seriously underrated vinyl pressing.Yes, there's some distortion, but that's honestly just how the album was made to sound. It sounds better than the CD (depending on your set up, of course) and sounds great in general.Get it if you love this album, or just get it in general because this is an excellent album.Edit:Whoa, when did this get so expensive? and since when was this "limited"?Edit: back to original prices and quantityEdit: never mind, it's expensive yet again.
That's not true...they've definitely done repressings. Hence why there's a bunch in stock all of a sudden, then they all get bought up, then prices skyrocket again until the next repress.
I was also wondering when it got so expensive! There were tens of copies listed the last time I looked, all around the initial base price, now it seems you'd be lucky to get one for twice that. With that in mind, I just ordered myself a second copy from Bed, Bath & Beyond's site (who knew they sold vinyl?).To my knowledge it was always limited, though. I spoke to a clerk at a local record shop around it's release and he said 3,000 were pressed. Not sure of his source though...
I read some pretty harsh reviews on amazon about this vinyl transfer. Apparently they used the same digital mix for the vinyl and it sounds absolutely terrible. Anyone have any insight on this?
Thats because the mixing of the original album is bad. There is alot of clipping even on the CD. Whoever mixed this album had it way too high
Seen the same review you're talking about, that guy is overreacting heavily. He's either a crazy, obsessed audiophile, or has shitty equipment. It's worth to have in your collection.
IMO it sounds pretty good. At the end of the day, vinyl is an afterthought for Kanye, it's not what makes him money. He is marketing this to a niche market, that is nothing more than a drop in the bucket to him. Which is probably why we haven't seen Yeezus on vinyl. My guess is that the mastering caused a less than desirable vinyl situation for some, the same way The Beatles remastered vinyl sounds less than perfect. Unless Kanye remixes the tapes ( chances are it is mostly pro tools), then people will hate the vinyl. But like I said earlier, it sounds good to me and on my rig.
Kanye West is one of the biggest douche bags in modern music. Unfortunately, when you have talent like this, you usually can get away with being a self-centered egomaniac. The rap lyrics are all right, but the uncanny ability for West (or his production team) to choose brilliant samples and rework them into catchy, powerful beats is unmatched in modern-day pop music.
Does every release have the pixelated artwork or is there another, uncensored pressing?
I've actually been contemplating making a hi-res print of the original album cover and slipping it in. All of them are pixelated.
My copy is pixelated as well. It's a shame, really. I doubt there would be another version just to un-censor one picture though.
Do any of these discs play at 45 rpm? The A-D sides are short enough.
no, they are all 33... kind of ridiculous how "Monster" is one side.
No, they are all 33
