Sidemen, especially vocalists, abound on this record, and they create the interplay needed to carry the tracks on Mishaps Happening from pleasant genre exercises to innovative, gorgeous works of their own. Sonny Akpan summons the weighty authority of Fela Kuti on his feature, "Use What You Got," and returning talent Alice Russell makes her case as the most soulful woman on wax in the 21st century. It should come as no surprise that Quantic's . home, Tru Thoughts, is giving Russell a full-length of her ow.

Quantic - Mishaps Happening Mishaps Happening is the third Quantic LP featuring vocal collaborations from Soul/Funk legend Spanky Wilson, Sonny Akpan (Funkees) and long time affiliate Alice Russell. Quantic aka Will Holland, made the move from Natural Self to Tru Thoughts at 20 with three albums under his belt Will Holland continues to explore the depths of jazz, deep funk and afro blended tight breaks with his distinctive production techniques. Under the Quantic moniker Will released his first album The 5th Exotic in 2001, some of the most respected names in underground music like Richard Dorfmiester, Gilles Peterson and LTJ Bukem rated it exeptional, no wonder when tunes like "Common Knowledge" and classic "Life in the Rain" are spun across dance floors all over Europe.
I've come to expect consistently fresh sounds from Ubiquity, and Mishaps Happening delivers a fair dose of their usual smoothed-out California breaks/sunrise house cocktail. But when Holland dips his ladle into the Afrobeat bucket, he comes up lacking; watery production and hollow beats fall short of a potentially thunderous dance floor deluge. Maybe it's a state of mind thing, because with certain clues, a listener expects certain results. That's what we get at the album's midsection, which stands out with some interesting arrangements and well-crafted songs. The funky "Trees and Seas" carries a blunted Thievery Corporation sparkle through another late night, while "Angels and Albatrosses", with its moody, distinctly downtempo sway, bobs along on waves of flute, marimba, and baritone, eventually leading to a satisfyingly serene resolution.
