In 1989, Janet Beveridge Bean (of rock band Eleventh Dream Day) and Catherine Irwin founded the band, and they have been supported by several musicians since then, including members of Califone (2005 Thinking of You tour). Bassist David Wayne Gay, formerly of Stump The Host, is another long-time member of the band. They released their records on Chicago's Thrill Jockey label. From 2006 to 2013, Bean and Irwin worked on other projects. A reissue of 1993's Feels Like the Third Time as a 20-year anniversary restarted the duo playing together as Freakwater

After the release of Thinking of You, Bean and Irwin both pursued low-key solo careers, while Bean continued to record and perform with Eleventh Dream Day. In 2012, Thrill Jockey reissued Feels Like the Third Time, and Bean and Irwin celebrated with a reunion tour that found their sweet and sour harmonies were as effective as ever. Following more live dates, Freakwater struck a deal with respected "insurgent country" label Bloodshot Records, and in February 2016 the group brought out its first album in over a decade, Scheherazade.

Formed in Kentucky in 1989 by Janet Bean and Catherin Irwin, releasing their debut in the same year, the alt-country outfit Freakwater were prolific through the 90s, releasing a further seven albums over the course of the decade. However, the last time they got together in the studio was for 2005’s Thinking Of You, the two founders working on other, individual projects. However, the 20th anniversary reissue of 1993’s Feels Like The Third Time saw them reconvene and take the band back out on the road
