First of all Whiplash never achieved a big following of thrash fans. After their first 3 records, the band penned mediocre LPs at best, practically disappearing from the scene. If you ever listen to Whiplash in the nineties, you get the feeling that they tried really hard to sound up to date with modern bands, sacrificing what made them special from the beginning: the raw thrash sound. Secondly, there is nothing really fancy with Thrashback. The production is nowhere near the top level of bands like Haunted or Slayer.
Thrashback is the 6th full length album from Jersey's Whiplash, and their 3rd through Massacre Records. As the title pretty obviously implies, this was the 'comeback' album, the inevitable return to the band's roots, even though it comes in direct succession to such folly as Cult of One and Sit Stand Kneel Prey.
Whiplash released two further albums, Cult of One and Sit, Stand, Kneel, Prey before the three Tonys recorded a final album together in 1998, Thrashback. Bassist Tony Bono died in 2002 after suffering a heart attack, at the age of 38. In 2009, founding member Tony Portaro and Joe Cangelosi reformed the band, adding bassist Rich Day, and recorded Unborn Again, released in September 2009. Whiplash played many festivals in Europe that year including Wacken Open Air in Germany, Jalometalli festival in Finland and shows in Italy, Norway, Mexico and Colombia.
