Cavalleria Rusticana / I Pagliacci album mp3
Cavalleria rusticana (pronounced ; Italian for "rustic chivalry") is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni to an Italian libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, adapted from an 1880 short story of the same name and subsequent play by Giovanni Verga. Considered one of the classic verismo operas, it premiered on 17 May 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.
Cavalleria rusticana. It is Easter morning. The story follows a group of actors in the 1800s who play traditional Italian Commedia dell’arte characters. Tonio is dressed as his character Taddeo, and addresses the audience, reminding them that actors are real people.

Damiano Michieletto’s Olivier Award-winning production of Mascagni and Leoncavallo’s one-act operas is a thrilling, cinematic experience. Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (The Players) are today Italian opera’s most famous double act, but they were written independently. Cavalleria rusticana came first, its hugely successful premiere in 1890 doubtless an influence on Leoncavallo. His Pagliacci in 1892 was another triumph.

Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci overflow with passion and the heat of the south, before each opera is halted by murderous jealousy. There is no place here for intellectual drama, simply pure emotions and the primordial power of music. These two one-act operas marked the dawn of verismo, Italian for realism, a style of opera in which the weaknesses and desires of ordinary people are examined in microscopic detail and told as realistically as possible.
