As explosive as the times were, Frank Foster's The Loud Minority reflected all of those mounting tensions while remaining hopeful in a self-determining way that gave rise to the "I'm Black and I'm Proud" sentiment. Foster assembled a giant of a big band featuring dual instrumentation all around, including keyboards, basses, and drummers to power a horn section chock-full of the best mainstream jazz and progressive players of the day.

Released on Mainstream, Frank Foster’s The Loud Minority – here reissued as part of our Funk & Jazz Classics series – has long been a collectors’ item, an early 70s gem featuring a stellar line-up of musicians. The album was rediscovered by the acid jazz scene in the early 90s for its hip credentials and then sampled by Japanese group the United Future Orchestra. Today it is considered a prime slice of spiritual jazz. Ohio-born Foster is not the first person you would expect to make such an album.

Frank Benjamin Foster III (September 23, 1928 – July 26, 2011) was an American tenor and soprano saxophonist, flautist, arranger, and composer. Foster collaborated frequently with Count Basie and worked as a bandleader from the early 1950s. In 1998, Howard University awarded Frank Foster with the BENNY GOLSON JAZZ MASTER AWARD. Foster was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and educated at Wilberforce University.

Thirty years ago, saxophonist Frank Foster and drummer Elvin Jones escorted eighteen other musicians (whom Foster dubbed the Loud Minority Big Band) into a recording studio in New York City to tape an album, Well Water. The hope was that a label would be found and the music released for public consumption. Foster, who played tenor in the Count Basie Orchestra from 1953-64 and led the band from 1986-95, has always been about swinging, and Well Water certainly marks no departure from that precept. The mood, as Foster recalls, "was really up, an appraisal that is affirmed from the outset. As a bonus, there are splendid solos by a number of sidemen whose names are relatively obscure today-trumpeter Charles Sullivan, alto . Williams, tenor Bill Saxton, baritone Kenny Rogers, trombonist Kiane Zawadi and pianist Tucker.
