Illuminations, released in 1969, is the sixth album by Buffy Sainte-Marie. Though most of the tracks did away with the backing she had used on her previous two albums, Illuminations had a completely different sound from anything she had previously done. From a basis of vocals and acoustic guitar, Sainte-Marie and producer Maynard Solomon used electronic synthesisers to create a sound that was much more experimental music than folk.
In the year 2000, the Wire magazine picked this spaced out gem from Native American folksinger and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie as one the "100 Albums That Set the World on Fire. Released in 1969, and now on CD, as of 2001, it was reissued as an import on 180 gram vinyl with its original glorious artwork and package. How Buffy Sainte-Marie came to make "Illuminations" remains one of the great mysteries of music history. Released at the tail end of 1969, the album sold so poorly and lost Vanguard so much money that they made her produce music that would be commercially viable (and succeeded only for the number 38 single "Mister Can't You See"). Sainte-Marie herself apparently disowned the recording because of the trouble it caused her and Vanguard in subsequent years, despite her continuing interest in its electronic sounds. Buffy Sainte-Marie is the most influential songwriter you've never heard of. This was the album that got her banned from American radio, so obviously this is the one to start your collection with. After you listen to this, you'll want to get everything she recorded.
