But other than that, True Love Stories is interchangeable with Johnson and Nutini’s debuts. Still, they both set cash registers ringing. Highlights, and there are some, include the end of the night sway-fest Colourful Day, in which he croons: It’s rude to point but attention’s what I want and she told me that I look like David Bowie. The Others taps into a different side of Pownall altogether; it’s a rainy, orchestral ballad that oozes tropical island charm while managing to rake up more musings of the heart, this time about how much better than everyone else his lady is. But the poor boy changes his mind about matters of the heart every utes, and by pouring his heart out in such a public manner, he’s probably frightened off every possible suitor with his near schizophrenic outbursts. He even admits: I long for the day that I can love someone and they can love me back, I’m just too complex.

His first job was as a tea boy for a fashion PR firm; he worked for French designer Roland Mouret for two years and enrolled at a prestigious art college in Milan. After Pownall supported Paloma Faith, Lissie, and Mr. Hudson on their . tours, his debut album, True Love Stories, produced by Eliot James (Noah and the Whale), was released in June 2010.

He says: 'I had to do it, but I knew I wasn't ready. I didn't want it to be just one man and a guitar,' he says. Where can I hear more? Chasing Time is out on Monday. True Love Stories follows in May. If Alan Pownall can be fortunate of one thing it's that his debut album, True Love Stories, has come out during the summer. You could quite easily imagine hearing his light and fluffy acoustic pop musings in the background of various BBQs and family gatherings, giving it an audience that he might not have achieved during the gloomier months. Much has been made of his similarities with Jack Johnson but tracks like 'Clara' and 'Life Worth Living' manage to be enjoyably breezy without being cheesy - or vomit-inducing
