In 1979, Simpson appeared for the last time on the charts with "The Flying Saucer Man and the Truck Driver. Haggard recorded his song "Lucky Old Colorado" in 1988; later that year Simpson was diagnosed with skin cancer and underwent surgery, but he fully recovered and continued his writing and performing career. Featuring 14 new songs, The Bard of Bakersfield was Simpson's first album in nearly a quarter century, arriving on the Windsor Music label in 2005. Simpson died in Bakersfield in January 2016 from complications of a heart attack; he was 81 years old. ~ Sandra.

Red Simpson in an undated photograph. Mr. Simpson was a songwriting partner with Buck Owens and wrote songs recorded by Mr. Owens, Merle Haggard and others. His last Top 100 single, The Flyin’ Saucer Man and the Truck Driver, was released in 1979. He toured extensively until the mid-1980s and in later years performed regularly at Trout’s, a club in Oildale, Calif. In 1995, he recorded two duets with the neo-traditionalist country singer Junior Brown, Semi Crazy and Nitro Express, a song he first recorded in 1966. In 2012, his work was collected in the five-CD set Hello, I’m Red Simpson. That year, Mr. Simpson, who lived in Bakersfield, was a featured performer at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum exhibition The Bakersfield Sound:.

Simpson gives voice to Collins' weary driver, contrasting a man's initial dream of freedom with the wreckage wrought by an absentee father. The collateral damage of the trucker's mobile life was never depicted with more clarity than on this recording.
