Pigbag were a post-punk band formed in Cheltenham, England. They were an adventurous band of music makers, fusing funk, jazz, dance music, and anything else they could get their hands on. The line up originally consisted of Chris Hamlyn on clarinet and percussion, Roger Freeman on percussion and trombone, James Johnstone on sax and guitar, and Chris Lee on trumpet.
Pigbag’s Got A Brand New Album! This was very intriguing. Makers of one of the finest dance singles of the eighties (and one guaranteed to get everyone on their feet at the time) have reformed with founding members Chris Lee, Ollie Moore and Kofi Adu and bombed back to the studio to record nine new tracks in the shape of ‘Year Of The Pigbag’. The title is as adventurous as the sound of their debut single, but, we all know what happened to that. Where the album goes slightly of the rails, is where Pigbag have obviously matured. Some of the tracks are far too long and become slightly pretentious. From the opening of ‘Out Of Chaos’ is an almost avant garde, freestyle sort of format.
Pigbag was started by Chris Hamlin in Cheltenham in late 1980. He recruited t Roger Freeman, (an old friend from his hometown Birmingham) along with Chris Lee (trumpet) and James Johnstone (guitar, alto sax). Later Andrew "Chip" Carpenter (drums) and Mark Smith (bass) both old school mates of James and former members of his previous band Hardware, were recruited for informal rehearsals.
