The Wayfaring Stranger (Asch 345) is an album consisting of three 10-inch, 78 rpm records by Burl Ives released on Asch in 1944. It should not be confused with Ives' 1944 album for Columbia Records (C-103) – also called The Wayfaring Stranger and itself a re-release of a 1941 album on Okeh Records – which contains different songs. The Asch album includes the first releases of two signature songs by Ives: "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" and "The Blue Tail Fl.
The Wayfaring Stranger" (also known as "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" or "I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger"), Roud 3339, is a well-known American folk and gospel song likely originating in the early 19th century about a plaintive soul on the journey through life. As with most folk songs, many variations of the lyrics exist. Members of the Western Writers of America chose it as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time. In 1935 an arrangement was included in The Sacred Harp shape note songbook.
Complete your Burl Ives collection. Burle Ives was one of a kind. This album is a great introduction to his immense talent, accompanying himself on guitar very subtly on 26 songs, all of which are under 2 minutes in length. You're better off getting the mono release of the album. The stereo re-channel is a lesser recording. It's quiet music so getting an album that's clean and well-cared for will be worth it. Typical snaps and dust crackle will be as loud as the guitar on most tracks.
