The assembled band included members of Santana's band and the Mahavishnu Orchestra in Michael Shrieve, Billy Cobham, Doug Rauch, Armando Peraza, Jan Hammer (playing drums!), and Don Alias. After three decades, Love Devotion Surrender still sounds completely radical and stunningly, movingly beautiful.

Three travelers of the spiritual pathways: Shri Chinmoy, Mahavishnu, and Devadip. Jazz, McLaughlin, and Santana: 3 elements necessary for this recording to work. The question to be answered concerns just how well this offering works. Released in 1973, Carlos Santana continued his exploration into Jazz. Partnering with John McLaughlin, combining both Santana's and McLaughlin's bands to create a hybrid sound different from his earlier music. That said, this is a very good album as long as you're open to a more jazz influenced sound. As always, Santana's fretwork is perfection; a worthy addition to my music library.
