Montserrat Figueras i García (Catalan: ; 1942–2011) was a Spanish soprano who specialized in early music. Figueras was born 15 March 1942 in Barcelona, Spain. After initially training as an actress, in 1966 she began studying early singing techniques together with her sister Pilar Figueras and developed an approach and technique for singing early music which combined historical fidelity with vitality. In 1974 she and Jordi Savall, her husband since 1968, Lorenzo Alpert and Hopkinson Smith formed Hespèrion XX, an early music ensemble. El Maestro, 1536 released: 2002. The text is not standard, but late Medieval Catalan . A Catalan version was recorded by Maria del Mar Bonet in 1979 on her album Saba de terrer, and by the vocal ensemble Obsidienne in 1995. The Song of the Sibyl (in all versions) was recorded in 1988 by Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras. A part of it is also performed by Dead Can Dance on their album Aion (1990) and live album Toward the Within (1994). A traditional Majorca version was recorded in 2014 by Cappela an acapella group of singers from Barcelona, Spain, in their album Cappela Per Nadal.
El Canto De La Sibila II: Galicia Castilla. This is the marvelous sequel, dating from 1996, of a marvelous disc originally published by Astrée in 1988, El Cant de la Sibil-la I or El Cant De La Sibil-la I (the latter entry selling cheaper at the time of writing), and reissued in 1997 by the same label as here, Fontalis (El Cant De La Sibil-La I (Catalunya)). Volume 1 was also reissued, in 2011, on Alia Vox, Savall's own label, in SACD version, El Cant de la.

I have the earlier Cant de la Sibil by Hesperion XX and I really enjoy it - all three versions. Not sure why I purchased this one, but am I ever glad that I did. The first Sybil on this CD is mostly a female choir accompanied by agitated strings. The second Sybil is more of a surprise: an interesting variation on the 'usual' fanfare, the same impassioned performance by Montserrat, but some surprising instrumental interludes which caught me by surprise. Sorry, I'm not giving the full story here. Some things should be experienced fresh. Achingly beautiful - quiet and powerful. Montserrat Figueras' voice is stunning, pure, sometimes piercing. I'm not a classical or ancient music aficionado, but this music haunts me (in the same way that Arvo Pärt's music does). The liner notes give terrific insight into the culture of the time, frame the music.
