Future Islands is an American synthpop band based in Baltimore, Maryland, and signed to 4AD, comprising Gerrit Welmers (keyboards and programming), William Cashion (bass, acoustic and electric guitars), and Samuel T. Herring (lyrics and vocals). The band was formed in January 2006 by Welmers, Cashion and Herring-the remaining members of the performance art college band Art Lord & the Self-Portraits-and drummer Erick Murillo.
Released on October 11, 2011, On the Water was Future Islands' 3rd album. Produced by Chester Endersby Gwazda, it was recorded in Elizabeth City, NC’s historic waterfront on the Pasquotank River. The band spent 10 days at the Andrew S. Sanders House, the family house of their college friend Abe Sanders. They wrote the half the album there and then recorded it, from late May to early June 2011. The album opens and closes with field recordings of water sounds. On the album’s title, the band explained: The very first song that was written for the album was On The Water.
Future Islands initially came out of Baltimore's Wham City scene; their first, rather unexceptional record was built from electro-punk and day-glo squiggles. Over the past few years, though, they've become more aesthetically disciplined. The thing that made In Evening Air such a bruiser was how seriously it took its job as a break-up album: Its gaze was singularly affixed on hurt. Their third and latest LP, On the Water, is more invested in wide-open spaces. The opening (and title) track gives all the elements of the band's sound more leg room: Herring's unhurried vocals, epic, smoldering synths, and the steady churn of a not-too-choppy tide on a sample that begins the song. Recorded in a friend's house in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, overlooking the Pasquotank River, On the Water draws from the imagery and movement of the sea.

Around 2008, Future Islands moved from North Carolina to Baltimore; in some ways, this move heralded a new, more coherent incarnation of the band. Before this there had been Art Lord & The Self Portraits, then, in 2006, Future Islands was born, but there remained elements of flux until the release of 2008’s Wave Like Home. His voice is a mix of a wolfish howl and boyish incantation, dripping pain on the title song, which is introduced by a slow burning synth that evolves from the background before filling the atmosphere with melancholy. So many of the synths on this record are prayerful, leaning more towards the warmth of an organ, or harpsichord, (such as on the lovely Give us the Wind ) which illustrates their clever and generous use of the instrument and its potential.
