Jesse Camp was a character? Back in 1998, Jesse's authenticity was called into question, when he claimed in a notorious Spin interview that he'd grown up on the wrong side of the tracks and was homeless - only for it to later come out that he'd attended a posh boarding school as a kid and that his father was a University of Connecticut professor. This could have been because the album was critically panned (although Jesse's own former "Wanna Be a VJ" competitor, the above-mentioned Dave Holmes, now considers it an underrated lost classic, and has even compared some tracks to the Hold Steady). It could be that Hollywood Records should have gone with "Summertime Squatters," not "See You Around," as the lead single.
See You Around kicks off the album by pretending that Nevermind never happened and hair metal still rules. The song and the album make good on hair metal’s implicit promise dating back to the days of Twisted Sister’s We’re Not Gonna Take It music video: Ostensibly heterosexual men with way too much eyeliner and very loud guitars are going to invade your school and liberate you from the tyranny of stodgy authority figures and their tedious rules. Jesse Camp’s art form isn’t singing or music television. No, Jesse Camp’s art form is being Jesse Camp

See, we jump off the bus Without a dime to our names We don't take the time to look around Just bum our spare change. So ask the port authority scruff Where all the kids can be found He'll say I know those boys, they live downtown That's where we went When all the money was spent. Take us in your arms Let us know your love's all around For us summertime squatters. They go clip our wings Call us messed up things They forgot we're just kids. Sprout, she's from Boston Dusty and Spike's from Detroit Camped out in Tompkin's Park Just rollin' up a joint.
