The title track later appeared on the band's second studio album The Bends (1995). The EP also contains outtakes from then-ongoing recording sessions for The Bends, compiling songs that were issued as B-sides on two separate "My Iron Lung" CD singles in the UK and other markets

My Iron Lung plays a style of hardcore that would hit the sweet spot for fans of Defeater and State Faults. The band’s penchant for melodic dissonance, coupled with its desire for restraint should appeal to those who like a scoop of post-rock in their hardcore ice cream sundaes. On the other hand, My Iron Lung definitely knows how to bring the ruckus, albeit with an ear more towards throwback emo than anything resembling a breakdown. The two most glaring weaknesses of Relief appear to be simple growing pains. I quite enjoyed my brief fling with My Iron Lung’s take on emotional hardcore, but it didn’t stay long enough for its own good. The only relief found on the album is the knowledge that you can hit repeat. Relief is like a good first date. It presents an interesting, somewhat unique character that is both wild and quietly pensive.
