A pastoral singer/songwriter no doubt, but an excellent one with a healthy desire to tread (cautiously) beside the well-worn paths on an LP with all original tracks. A tight yet loose band backing him, Gee starts out on his troubled journey with conviction and musical intelligence from the very first note. Rural elements are strongly present, though never intrusive and always stylish. The production is simple and clear and the songs are mostly fairly persuasive, while Gee's voice is a fine and emotional vehicle, again without anything pushy about it. The rocking Waterweight is quite good with its lovely flute and expert arrangement, as is the opening Dimensions, a sombre and introspective song. The very esoteric Confessions with mellotron interceptions and an eerie wavering sound could easily pass for what seems to be called "downer-folk" nowadays. Not very spectacular perhaps, but a very worthwhile effort nonetheless. The accompanying book delivers all lyrics, all chords and all melodies in beautiful fashion.
New for the 70's, Country Funk Acid Folk Guru Arthur Gee.Yep. A little something for everyone. This took a few plays to fully grasp but was enjoyable from the start. Now it's heavy in the rotation, as is anything Arthur Gee in this part of town. This was my first Tumbleweed Records Inc. and is still my favorite now.Dimensions, PlainTalk and Confessions are all tracks which show up as sparse demos on the holy grail Two Dot one sided LP, but are full band or orchestrated studio versions here. Plain Talk is a monster, backwards guitars, harmonica, driven by the bass kind of thing. It just takes over in the jammed out parts. It's floating on the cusp of a dixie fried boogie that grew from the spacious folk of Dimensions. It sounds pretty modern to me for the early 70's, though the gentle mysticism is all over this, so you won't lose sight of where this came from. From here, it mellows out,The lazy old time feel of Cotton Suede followed by the sing along Love Song 451.Followed by probably my favorite track on the album, A.L.F.A.L.F.A.It's a hippie mover down on the farm. A light weight vocal and simple, tasteful instrumentation carry these tunes around.Little bits of fiddle, harmonica, a swirl of organ.Waterweight could be one more classic psychedelic song for yourFlute driven things mix. The gatefold artwork is cool, I love the design of the cover! It also comes with a songbook so you can play along if it turns into that kind of night. Recommended.
