Album cover art is always a great source of inspiration because there’s such an eclectic mix of styles to feast your eyes on. There’s no rules that determine what an album cover should look like, it just needs to be attention grabbing, possibly relate to the genre of the music it represents, and present the name of the artist along with their album title (although some examples don’t seem to make this requirement much of a priority!)
Album covers are one of the various ways in which first impressions affect an audience's perception of a given musician or band. There are various ways in which an album cover is visualized. The physical design of album covers has been the subject of creative innovation. Ogden's Nut Gone Flake by the Small Faces was originally in a circular metal tin, and Happy to Meet – Sorry to Part by Horslips was in an octagonal package. Anyway by Family was originally issued in an opaque plastic package through which a design (a Leonardo sketch) could be seen.

As a designer, working on an album cover art can be one of the most creative projects that you ever do. While many design projects will have a very strict, set brief from a client, album cover art is much more about capturing a mood or feeling from the piece of music. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re keen on immersing yourself into art, then you may find it a fascinating and enjoyable challenge. Designing album art is an extraordinarily exciting task and there are very few constraints holding you back
As physical album sales decline, album covers need to work harder than ever before. Here are our favourites from the past 12 months. We love this album cover for Kevin Devine's 2013 album 'Bubblegum'. The painting, titled 'Melted George Washington 2' was created by artist Valerie Hegarty while the album layout was taken care of by Chris Bracco. It's great how Hegarty's artwork challenges the norm of traditional portraits, mimicking Devine's musical output. 02. 'Surfing Strange' by Swearin'. We love the playful illustrations showcased in this album artwork.
