The New Life were formed from the ashes of another band, The Cindermen, who were a garage rock group signed by Moonglow Records in 1965. The New Life was formed by Don Whaley; Alan Shapazian (ex-member of Raik's Progress); Phil Reed; and Duane Scott (also ex-member of Raik's Progress) who was the original keyboard player. Steve Wood, who had been in an Oak Cliff, Dallas, band called The Penthouse, replaced Duane Scott after about a year into the band. Besides the Sidehackers soundtrack, they also scored songs for a film called Black Water Gold.

The New Life is the second album by Northern Irish band Girls Names. It was released on 18 February 2013 by Tough Love Records in Europe and on 12 March 2013 by Slumberland Records in the USA. Its release was preceded by the album's title track "The New Life" as a single on 13 November 2012 and the song "Hypnotic Regression" as a download-only single on 10 December 2012. The album cover features a photograph by Rob Peart.
Sometime afterwards, the Irish group decided to change things up and lose the noisy half of the equation, and for their second album, 2013's The New Life, they go for a much more sonically restrained and atmospheric sound. Where before there would be squalling guitars and pounding drums, now there are moody synth washes and echoing guitar lines - it's a much more dramatic sound that owes more to trench-coated bands of the early '80s like Echo and the Bunnymen or Joy Division than to any noise pop groups.
