Henry Gross (born April 1, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York), is a singer-songwriter best known for his 1976 top-10 hit "Shannon". Gross began his career with Sha Na Na as a guitarist. He possesses a falsetto voice, which was put to good use on "Shannon", a song inspired by the untimely passing of Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Irish Setter.
1973's Henry Gross, his first album for A&M, sold well regionally and set the stage for the following year's Plug Me into Something, which took his popularity to another level. Gross then moved to Cashman & West's own label Lifesong for his next effort, Release, which featured the gold single "Shannon," a song inspired by the death of Carl Wilson's Irish Setter. Despite the popularity of Release and its singles, Gross' follow-up, Show Me to the Stage, didn't produce any hits.
Henry Gross left Sha Na Na the first chance he had, signing to ABC Records for a record that went nowhere. It was quickly followed on that path by a pair of LPs for A&M, then Gross made the jump to Lifesong Records, the label Terry Cashman and Tommy West had recently founded. Cashman & West produced Release, Gross' 1976 debut for the label that also happened to be his breakthrough thanks to the soaring de facto Beach Boys tribute "Shannon.
