This collection of Copland focuses largely on music composed originally for the ballet. The music from Billy the Kid, one of Copland's earlier works, is infused with quotations of "Cowboy Songs" and western "sound effects" that only a composer like Copland could successfully pull off while maintaining the work's integrity as art music. A strong performance by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin only serves to highlight the idiomatic characteristics of the suite.

But the so-called Fanfare for the Common Man is lifted from his recording of the Third Symphony; its beginning is not the same as that of the real fanfare. This is a classic album, containing several of the works in the essential Copland oeuvre; the sound is not as good as you'll find in a more contemporary recording, but for most listeners the spirit will make up for that. -Sarah Bryan Miller.
