Pharrell said Alaska was like nothing he’d ever heard, but in 2017 it fits right in: a gently lilting beat that vaguely evokes tropicalia (or, for that matter, the Neptunes in their prime) along with a falsetto pre-chorus that vaguely evokes R&B. Follow-up single Dog Years, dotted with pan flutes, comes across as the exact midpoint of Peter Gabriel, Lorde, and Bleeding Love, and while no one’s done that particular intersection lately, the industry’s certainly revived everything in the vicinity

The night is robed in spangled black And soon we shall be sleeping Beyond the moon that rides on high The radiant dawn is creeping, creeping

Maggie Rogers became an overnight sensation in 2016 when her performance at an NYU master class left Pharrell speechless. A year later, she delivers her highly anticipated debut EP, a mesmerizing blend of folk harmonies and electronic rhythms that’s both nostalgic and unmistakably current. Marvel at the strength of her controlled falsetto on "Alaska and Lorde-level intensity on Color Song. Now That the Light Is Fading - EP Maggie Rogers.
Unfortunately, the phantom presence of nature samples does little to alter the tone of the EP’s dance tracks - after all, if a tree falls in a Maggie Rogers song and no one is able to hear it, does it even make a sound? On the other hand, the more conspicuous samples often feel out of place . She may still be refining her sound, but Now That the Light Is Fading is a promising start to what will likely be a long and fruitful career.

Rogers' vocals wind up giving these otherwise icy productions some warmth, and if the five songs all adhere to a general aesthetic, they're also varied. Color Song" is a tone poem, "Alaska" feels as intimate as a straight folk song, "On + Off" percolates with a distinct claustrophobic rhythm, "Dog Years" is as stylish as Elle Goulding, and "Better" is a bittersweet denouement. All combined, this adds up to a rich and impressive official debut. Stephen Thomas Erlewine.
Last year 22-year-old Maggie Rogers found herself in a rare position for an unsigned artist. There she was, a total unknown, in the middle of a serious swell of industry hype after praise was heaped on her lush folktronica sound by one of the biggest artists in the world. See, Pharrell Williams had casually dropped by New York University to deliver a music masterclass and when he heard Rogers’ track ‘Alaska’ – which features on this fragile yet fulsome EP – he had to hold back the tears. It’s simple but stunning, recalling criminally underrated vocal trio Mountain Man, whose only album, 2010’s gorgeous a cappella ‘Made The Harbor’ should be sought out by fans of Rogers, as well as band member Amelia Meath’s current project, organic disco duo Sylvan Esso. Williams’ fave, ‘Alaska’, is up next. Like Haim on a hiking trip, its melancholy melody is at odds with its serious groove.
