Traditional Russian folk dance is as broad and diverse as the nation itself. While most foreigners identify traditional Russian dance with the stomping and and knee bending characteristic of Eastern Slavic dance styles, many forget about traditions of dance that originated from Turkic, Uralic, Mongolic and Caucasian peoples who are also native to Russia. Below we have identified a small list of popular folk dance from Russia. The first four (from the Khorovod to the Chechotka), are traditional Russian dances that first come to mind when thinking of Russian folk dance.

Russian folk costumes are very diverse. Not only every province, but even every district could have its own style, its peculiar combination of colours, or cut of the sarafan (peasant pinafore dress), shape of the headdress, and specific ornament patterns. In olden times girls would for several years prepare festive clothes for themselves: decorate the sarafan and kokoshnik with ornaments and gems, embroider shirts and jackets. Songs were carried all around Russia and passed from generation to generation. Russian national dance includes the round dance, the improvised dances and dances with a certain sequence of figures (quadrille and the like). In every province these dances differ as per the character and performing manner and usually have their own name depending on the name of the district or the dancing song. The measure is usually 2/4 or 6/8.
The Moiseyev Dance Company, formerly known as the State Academic Folk Dance Ensemble of the USSR, is the most celebrated folk dance company from Russia. The company has toured 60 countries and employs about 200 dancers; it was the first Soviet dance company to perform in the USA (1958). On this 1992 recording, released just after the collapse of the Soviet Union, members of the Soviet Army Band, the Moscow Radio Orchestra of Folk Instruments, and accordion players of the dance company play the dance music associated with the Moiseyev.
