An Innocent Man is the ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel, released on August 8, 1983. The concept album is a tribute to the American popular music of Joel's adolescent years with Joel paying homage to a number of different popular American musical styles from the late 1950s and early 1960s, most notably doo-wop and soul music.

Since he labored so hard at the record, he decided it was time for a break - it was time to record an album just for fun. And that's how his homage to pre-Beatles pop, An Innocent Man, was conceived: it was designed as a breezy romp through the music of his childhood.

There's a handful of tracks that leave me wanting more like "Careless Talk", "Leave A Tender Moment Alone", and "Keeping the Faith". I just want to point out these are NOT poorly written songs, my main problem is the arrangement. Any Billy Joel fan knows this album gave us "Uptown Girl," his tribute to his then-wife, Christie Brinkley. It also gave us the a cappella "The Longest Time" (with him singing all the parts), the Temptations-like "Tell Her About It," the old-style rocker "Keeping the Faith," the soulful "Leave a Tender Moment Alone," and the title track.
