Under the direction of Mark Goldenberg and Peter Bernstein, the leader of the training, one of the most respected musicians of the new California scene, the band decided to record an LP re on their own, with excellent results.
The Cretones were a United States, Los Angeles-based power pop group in the early 1980s. On the Billboard Hot 100, the group's one charted song, "Real Love," peaked at no. 79 in June 1980; it was from their first album, Thin Red Line. The song Empty Heart, from their second album Snap Snap, was their only other song to receive significant airplay on album rock stations, but it did not chart as a single. They are perhaps best known as the band that provided three of the songs on Linda Ronstadt's Platinum-selling 1980 New Wave Rock album, Mad Love.
The Thin Red Line refers to an episode in the Battle of Balaklava on 25 October 1854, during the Crimean War. In this incident, around 200 men of the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders), aided by a small force of 100 walking wounded, 40 detached Guardsmen, and supported by a substantial force of Turkish infantrymen, led by Sir Colin Campbell, routed a Russian cavalry charge. Previously, Campbell's Highland Brigade had taken part in actions at the Battle of Alma and the Siege of Sevastopol.

Cretones' 'Thin Red Line' certainly tanked in its time. But hindsight, through the courtesy of a 35-year rearview mirror, offers a different perspective. Her so-called new wave album showcased them next to three Costello numbers, where they more than held their own. But Mad Love and Thin Red Line appeared almost simultaneously, so you can guess which one got all the attention. For the Cretones, the identity crisis began right here, at Point A. Ironically, the Ronstadt set hasn’t aged nearly as well as the Cretones album – which was never issued on CD. The band made one more album (Snap! Snap!) before dissolving into the wind
