Following Draconian Times, the album marks the group's first complete departure from doom metal in favour of a more gothic and electronic direction. One Second is Paradise Lost's first album recorded in digital format. Two songs, "The Hour" and "Slave", were written for this album, but have not been included on the album nor its reissues.
