Nightmare is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold. It was released on July 27, 2010 through Warner Bros. It was produced by Mike Elizondo and mixed in New York City by noted engineer Andy Wallace. Nightmare is the fifth studio album of the heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold. It was released July 26th, 2010. Originally, Nightmare was supposed to be a long and adventurous album, with a dark story they were gonna take their fans on a journey – with the theme of the world’s state in subjects like economy, racism, schools and religion. However, with the passing of the band’s drummer and best friend, Jimmy The Rev Sullivan, the album turned out differently. Former Dream Theatre drummer Mike Portnoy stepped in to finish the recording on Nightmare. The album was released on July 27, 2010 by Warner Bros. No drumming was recorded by The Rev on the album, however, his vocals were used (it should be noted that The Rev did create many of the songs, he simply did not record any portion).

Avenged Sevenfold’s fifth studio album is their first without drummer James The Reverend Sullivan, who died in 2009. Dream Theatre’s Mike Portnoy makes for a stellar replacement both musically and sentimentally as Sullivan was largely inspired by the talented Sullivan. Nightmare, Fiction and, Natural Born Killer are prime examples of what Avenged Sevenfold is, they've sort of lost there experimental portions unlike City of Evil or Waking the Fallen. I like Avenged Sevenfold and this album. You either love this album or hate it. There's not really an in between.
