Characters is a solo album by guitarist John Abercrombie that was recorded in 1977 and released by ECM in 1978. Upon the first listen there may not appear to be very much here; however, this music needs to be absorbed over several listens to appreciate Abercrombie's brilliance.

Not the virtuoso of his primary influences - Django Reinhardt, Tal Farlow and Jim Hall - Abercrombie is much more the introvert. He often bypasses traditional techniques to pursue experimental sounds and rhythms. Along with Ralph Towner, whom he has recorded with before (see Sargasso Sea), Abercrombie makes excellent use of space within both his compositions and solos.

I'm afraid I cannot discuss this album in terms of "meribolant soul melodies" or such, but if you're looking for a peaceful and relaxed solo album from one of the top jazz guitarists, CHARACTERS might be just right for you. Abercrombie recorded this album entirely on his own, using electric and acoustic guitars as well as some mandolin. On most tracks he uses overdubs.

The release of Open Land: Meeting John Abercrombie comes just nineteen days before the one year anniversary of the guitarist's untimely passing on August 22, 2017 at age 72. Over the course of this clearly loving ninety-minute film, director, screenwriter, co-producer, co-Director of Photography and co-sound engineer Arno Oehri has managed to shape a surprising amount out of relatively little interview and performance footage.

John Laird Abercrombie (December 16, 1944 – August 22, 2017) was an American jazz guitarist, composer and bandleader. His work explored jazz fusion, post bop, free jazz and avant-garde jazz. Abercrombie studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He recorded his debut album, Timeless with Manfred Eicher's ECM label, and has recorded principally with this label since. Abercrombie has played with Billy Cobham, Ralph Towner, Jack DeJohnette, Charles Lloyd, Michael Brecker and Randy Brecker.
