If memory serves me right Precision Tapes (Pye's Cassette manufacturing brand) first released Dolby B encoded tapes and 8 tracks followed by EMI who also started to release Chrome HQ tapes and 8 tracks. The first insisters of the Philips-DGG family was DGG themselves and their incomparable classic recordings. Eindhoven (Philips HQ) had tulips and daffodils on their faces. "You vill buy zese encoders from Dr Dolby unt encode our tapes jah. Or vee go to PRT! DNL vot! No, DHL, H..L so zay can ship ze master tapes to Mitcham. Would love to have been a fly on the wall at the board meetings. Great days of pioneering Hi-Fi. Don't think Philips-DGG ever got into Quadraphonics, they worried about 4 X the hisssss.
What a memory Phonogram's truly un-fidelity musicassettes all without Dolby B (Philips sour grapes because they hadn't invented it and refused to pay Dr Ray Dolby licencing fees took them 2 more years to conceed and encode.......Philips hissss lessssss answer was.......DNLDramatic Noise Limiter simply a treble cutter! I think I'll stick to JVC's ANRS ) You could infact home record the vinyl album on a Dolby B encoder-decoder incorporated deck or through a Teac add on Dolby B unit and using good quality tape BASF ferrichrome or TDK SA and when played back on a Nachamechi cassette deck have results that put the above commercial release in to the hiss world dustbin. The "in joke"- mickey take with us Hi-Fi buffs at the time........ "Philips>>>>>>>>simply years behind" (their ad slogan was years ahead!!).Dr Ray Dolby....... Dolby laboratories Clapham London.
