There are many who point to Solomon Burke’s 2002 release of “Don’t Give Up On Me” as being a sensational unexpected bit of musical wanderlust, where instead of attempting to conjure new wine in the same old bottle, Burke delivered an album that was unexpectedly fresh, sounding nothing like the work he’s known for, with artists like Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, and Brian Wilson making contributions. Now, as good as “Don’t Give Up On Me” was, it was not within Mr. Burke’s comfort zone, and to that I might add, that doing another such album would only be a lesser version of that crossover masterpiece. Here, on “Make Do With What You Got,” Burke is on solid footing, seeming to charge headlong out of the 60’s with Don Was at his side, delivering a bombshell soulistic session that brings all you know and love about Solomon Burke right back home, complete with huge vocal choruses, horns, keyboards, and a razor sharp production by Don Was that not only recaptures the soulful R&B sound of the 60’s, but ups it a notch, showing that the genre is alive and sounding sweeter than ever.Review by Jenell Kesler
